| Abby Ripley
Abby Ripley was born into a Montana cattle-ranching family that eventually moved to Arizona. There she earned degrees in music education and music history. Having reached academic burn-out she joined the Peace Corps for a short stint of service in Niger, Africa. A few years later she left the American West for good and moved to New York City to attend the New York Institute of Photography. However, needing to earn a living, she subsequently became a travel agent and then an insurance agent before deciding to return to school to become an anthropologist. In that endeavor she spent about two years doing fieldwork in Ladakh, a region in northwest India, where she returns as often as possible to visit her "family" and friends and to follow up on avenues of research. She is a member of the International Association of Ladakh Studies. Abby was given her first camera on her ninth birthday. Since that time, she has never stopped taking photographs. However, until recently she failed to obtain the results she strived for. It wasn't until she was given a Nikon digital camera that she was emboldened to take risks and experiment and has now begun to create a style of her own. Over the last four years she has taught herself to use various computer graphic programs to go beyond the traditional photographic look. She now calls herself a digital artist. Needless to say, she is crazed by the infinite possibilities, which the digital mode can bring her and spends endless hours photographing objects and playing with them on the computer! She specializes in floral compositions because she labors long hours in her own large garden and is rewarded with opportunities to photograph flowers and other vegetation from bud to dry stalk, in every season, and in all light conditions. It is an endless source and endeavor of great pleasure. She has only recently "gone public" with her artistic creations. Click here to see some of Abby's pictures |
